History at Bradley Primary School
History is essentially about people and their development over a period of time. As the children see the diversity of human experience they are able to understand more about themselves as individuals and as members of society. History is essential to our understanding of the development of the modern world. Skills developed through the study of History include research, assessment of evidence and the ability to make individual conclusions.
EYFS – History is covered in all topics under the heading of ‘Knowledge and Understanding of the World.’
Children should be taught about
KS1 -
Changes within living memory and events beyond living memory that are significant, nationally or globally.
The lives of significant individuals in the past who have contributed to national and international achievements. Some should be used to compare aspects of life in different periods. Significant historical events, people and places in their own locality.
KS2 -
Changes in Britain from the Stone Age to the Iron Age. The Roman Empire and its impact on Britain. A local history study.
A study of an aspect or theme in British history that extends pupils’ chronological knowledge beyond 1066. The achievements of the earliest civilizations – an overview of where and when the first civilizations appeared and a depth study of one of the following: Ancient Sumer; The Indus Valley; Ancient Egypt; The Shang Dynasty of Ancient China.
Ancient Greece – a study of Greek life and achievements and their influence on the western world. Britain’s settlement by Anglo-Saxons and Scots. A non-European society that provides contrasts with British history – one study chosen from: early Islamic civilization, including a study of Baghdad c. AD 900; Mayan civilization c. AD 900; Benin (West Africa) c. AD 900-1300.
The Viking and Anglo-Saxon struggle for the Kingdom of England to the time of Edward the Confessor.
Black History Week
For Black History week, each year group chose an inspirational person to find out about. The children created art work and undertook writing activities. They then displayed them on their classroom doors, so the school could see what they had been learning about.
Workshops
Years 2 - 6 had a visit from a historian called Andrew Holroyde. He did workshops with the children called 'What is history?'
The children became historians for the session. They asked and answered questions about the past and learnt what history is.
